Sedona was my first dog as an adult. Right after I married, we
bought a house and the first order of business was to get a dog.
I wanted a golden retriever, so I picked the breed, but Jeff picked
the dog. She still ended up “mine”. We adopted her
from Golden Retriever Rescue of Greater Los Angeles at about 6
years old, and she lived to be almost 16. Outlived the marriage
even!
She was loved by everyone who ever met her (unless they had four
legs). Those big brown eyes and fluffy wagging tail won most folks
over. She even had her 15 minutes of fame when she appeared onstage
with the host of a radio station’s talent show. She was his
straight man who never did the obedience commands or tricks he
asked. Sedona the Wonder Dog was the hit of the after-party!!
Lightning (9/26/90 - 12/26/03)
Lightning was my first Vizsla. When I chose a second dog, I knew
I liked the sporting breeds, but wanted a short haired dog. I met
Bev Wanjon (of California’s Russet Leather kennels) and bugged
the crap out of her until she finally placed a dog with me. He
wasn’t quite a rescue, but a breeder return. His family didn’t
have the time or energy to devote, which was a real shame because
Lightning never really recovered from the neglect they dealt.
He was a tortured soul, but he loved me and we bonded very tightly.
I learned so much from Lightning…he was my “heart” dog.
It hurt so much to finally let him go and I think of him often.
A lot of times when I’m kissing or hugging Duc, I accidentally
say “I love you Lightning!”
